Gerdau’s Q3 2024 Profit Dips 10% to R$1.43 Billion

Gerdau reported an adjusted net income of R$ 1.43 billion ($251 million) for the third quarter of 2024. This figure marks a 10% decline from the previous year, aligning with market expectations. The company’s performance reflects the broader challenges in the steel industry, including fluctuating global demand and currency impacts.

The company’s adjusted EBITDA reached R$ 3.02 billion ($530 million), also down by 10% compared to the same period last year. This decline highlights the pressures faced by Gerdau in maintaining profitability amidst global economic uncertainties. The EBITDA margin decreased from 19.6% to 17.4%, indicating tighter profit margins.

Despite these challenges, Gerdau’s net revenue stood at R$ 17.38 billion ($3.05 billion), showing a modest annual increase of 1.8%. This growth was primarily driven by a favorable exchange rate for exports, which partially offset lower sales prices abroad.

Gerdau’s operations in Brazil showed resilience, with increased steel production and demand from the construction sector bolstering results. However, international operations faced headwinds, particularly in North America, where high interest rates and reduced consumer spending impacted the automotive sector.

The depreciation of the Brazilian real against the dollar (-6.4%) played a dual role. It enhanced export competitiveness but also increased domestic operational costs. Consequently, the cost of sales rose to R$ 14.8 billion ($2.6 billion), up 3.7% from the previous year, squeezing profit margins further.

In response, Gerdau focused on cost control and operational efficiency to navigate these economic pressures. The company maintained a strong financial position with a cash balance of R$ 8.8 billion ($1.54 billion) and reduced net debt to R$ 3.7 billion ($649 million), reflecting a strategic emphasis on financial stability.

Looking ahead, Gerdau plans to continue its focus on innovation and sustainable practices, as evidenced by its recognition at the Steelie Awards for excellence in sustainability.
