French Police Raid on Largest Opposition Party: Rising Populists Face Elite Pressure

French authorities raided the headquarters of the National Rally, France’s main opposition party, on July 9, 2025. This action is part of a broad investigation into the party’s campaign finances.

Officers seized documents, emails, and accounting records, targeting both the party’s offices and several companies linked to its campaign funding. Two judges supervised the operation, which involved about twenty armed officers.

The investigation centers on whether the National Rally broke strict rules on campaign funding. Authorities are checking if the party used illegal loans from private individuals and if it submitted fake or inflated invoices for campaign expenses.

French law allows private loans to political parties, but only under tight regulations. The state reimburses some campaign costs, so any false claims could mean misuse of public money. The inquiry covers the 2022 and 2024 election campaigns.

No one has been charged so far. This raid follows a recent court ruling against Marine Le Pen, the former party leader. She received a five-year ban from public office for misusing European Union funds.

The court found that she and other party officials used EU money meant for parliamentary aides to pay party staff. Le Pen is appealing the decision, but the ban currently blocks her from running in the 2027 presidential election.

The National Rally has grown quickly, becoming the largest opposition force in France. Its leader, Jordan Bardella, has called the police operation unprecedented and claims it is part of a campaign of harassment by political elites.

He argues that the party faces unfair targeting because it is close to winning broad public support. The party’s critics say the investigations are necessary to enforce the law.

Supporters, however, see them as attempts by liberal European elites to stop the rise of successful nationalist populists. The party’s financial troubles are not limited to France.

The European Public Prosecutor’s Office is also investigating the National Rally’s former group in the European Parliament, Identity and Democracy, for allegedly misusing €4.3 million in funds between 2019 and 2024.

This adds another layer of legal pressure as the party’s popularity grows. These events highlight a troubling shift in Europe.

Actions once condemned by Europeans when observed in African or Latin American countries—such as legal crackdowns on opposition movements—now appear within Europe itself.

This development marks a significant departure from the continent’s own stated democratic ideals and raises questions about the integrity of its political processes. Many observers see this as a moment of shame, as Europe risks adopting the same tactics it once criticized elsewhere.
