Extratropical cyclone death toll rises to 13 in southern Brazil
The death toll from a subtropical cyclone that hit southern Brazil, causing floods and landslides, has risen to 13, while four people remain missing.
The Civil Defense Department confirmed the numbers, and reported that five previously missing individuals have been found alive.
Two of the recent fatalities and all the missing persons are from the town of Caraá.

Since Friday, heavy rains from the cyclone have affected the Rio Grande do Sul state, which borders Uruguay and Argentina, resulting in severe flooding and landslides.
Over 4,500 people in 41 municipalities have been displaced.
Neighboring state Santa Catarina has also been affected, but no casualties or evacuations have been reported.
Brazil’s President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has announced federal aid to the affected regions, and a team of ministers is being dispatched to support the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite.
