A bus carrying the Chamber Orchestra of Chile plunged off a steep street in Valparaíso on Saturday night, killing principal violist Penélope Knuth. In the Chile orchestra bus crash, 13 more people were injured, four of them seriously, Chile’s Culture Ministry said. Knuth was born in New York, so the crash has claimed the life of an American who spent more than three decades shaping Chilean classical music.

The orchestra, known by its Spanish initials OCCH, is a state ensemble run by the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage. Its musicians are public employees, said Manuel Millones, the presidential delegate who represents the central government in the Valparaíso region.

The players had just performed Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, “Titan,” under Swiss conductor Emmanuel Siffert, 24 Horas reported. The concert took place at the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, a university on the Valparaíso waterfront. The bus was taking them back to Santiago.

How the Crash Happened

The crash happened shortly after 8:50 p.m. local time (7:50 p.m. ET) on Saturday 10 October, ADN Radio reported. The bus was heading down Diego Portales street, at its junction with Amalia Paz. The stretch, between the Barón and Placeres hills, is known locally as the “Bajada de los Chanchos.”

Rodrigo Mundaca, the elected regional governor of Valparaíso, told ADN Radio the bus lost control on a very sharp bend that is not suited to heavy vehicles. It overturned and fell into the car park of a residential complex, landing on parked cars.

Officials gave slightly different heights for the fall. Mundaca put it at 15 to 20 metres, while police information cited by Cooperativa said about 25 metres. A security camera filmed the moment the bus dropped, BioBioChile reported, but the footage does not show why the driver lost control.

“It is a truly horrific accident,” Mundaca said. “The driver had probably not driven through there before; it is a very narrow and steep road.”

About 100 volunteers from the Valparaíso fire brigade worked to free passengers trapped inside, Cooperativa reported. Fire officer Eugenio Riveros said the rescue was complex because the bus had come to rest on top of a car. “Given the height from which the bus fell, we only have one death to regret. It could have been much worse,” he said.

Who Was Penélope Knuth

Knuth was the orchestra’s principal viola and had played with the ensemble for more than 30 years, the Culture Ministry said in a farewell message on social media. Teletrece reported that she was born in New York and had lived in Chile for many years, and 24 Horas gave her nationality as American. She was also an associate professor at the Faculty of Arts of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, Teletrece added.

In its statement, the ministry said her career had left “a significant mark on the cultural life of our country.” It said it had contacted her family, and in its social-media message it sent condolences to her daughter, Georgina.

In an early account, Mundaca told ADN Radio that the person who died had been in one of the cars the bus crushed. The ministry later identified the victim as Knuth, a passenger and orchestra member, and a fire officer at the scene also described the victim as having been inside the bus.

President Kast, who founded the conservative Republican Party, posted on X late on Saturday. “I deeply regret the serious accident suffered by a bus in Valparaíso that was carrying members of the Chamber Orchestra,” he wrote. He said government teams had been deployed to help the injured and offered prayers for the victim.

The Investigation

Carolina Monsalve, a prosecutor in nearby Viña del Mar, said the driver had been detained. He was due to take a breath test, followed by toxicology and blood-alcohol tests, she told 24 Horas. Being detained is not a charge, and the driver is presumed innocent.

Monsalve noted that public buses using that street are of a different size from the vehicle involved. She said that point was for the SIAT to confirm. The SIAT is the specialist crash-investigation unit of the Carabineros, Chile’s national police.

Relatives of musicians told Cooperativa that some passengers had been worried about the speed of the trip. Investigators have not confirmed this. The injured were taken to several hospitals, with the most serious cases treated at Carlos van Buren Hospital in Valparaíso.

The crash adds to a hard week for emergency services. Santiago is still recovering from the mudslide covered in Chile Declares Las Condes Disaster Zone, 6 Hurt, and questions remain over warnings, as reported in Chile Explains Why No Alert Hit Las Condes.

What It Means for You

For Americans in Chile, the US Embassy in Santiago is the point of contact if a US citizen dies or is hurt abroad. US travellers can register with the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive alerts.

For visitors to Valparaíso, the city’s hills are steep and many streets are narrow and winding. If you book a coach or charter, ask the operator whether the driver knows the route and whether the vehicle is suited to it.

One reassurance is the emergency response. Firefighters freed every passenger, ambulances from Valparaíso and Viña del Mar took the injured to hospital, and nine of the 13 injured were not listed as serious.

What Is Not Known

The cause of the crash is not known. Officials have not said whether speed, brakes, the route chosen or the driver’s condition played a part. The results of the driver’s breath and toxicology tests had not been released by Sunday morning.

Casualty figures shifted through the night. Early reports cited up to 40 people affected, while the Culture Ministry’s latest count was 13 injured. The condition of the four seriously injured people has not been detailed.

It is not known whether the US Embassy has been in contact with Knuth’s family, or whether the orchestra will cancel upcoming concerts.
