Brazil’s Economic Indicators: A Closer Look at July’s Inflation Dynamics

In July, Brazil’s General Market Price Index (IGP-M) climbed by 0.61%, a slower rise compared to June’s 0.81% but still surpassing the expected 0.45%.

Over the past year, the index has risen 1.71%, showing a substantial 3.82% increase over twelve months. This marks a significant recovery from last year’s 7.72% decline.

Despite broader economic pressures like currency devaluation and regulated sector adjustments, a sharp drop in fresh food prices primarily drove the index’s slowdown.

The Producer Price Index (IPA-M), accounting for 60% of the IGP-M, increased by only 0.68%, down from June’s 0.89%, according data from FGV Ibre.

This deceleration stemmed from fresh food prices plummeting from a 3.00% increase in June to a 4.43% decrease in July.

Additionally, the Intermediate Goods group within the IPA-M saw a rise to 0.91%, fueled by significant fluctuations in fuels and lubricants.

Conversely, the raw materials sector experienced a slight deceleration, reflecting the volatility in commodities like iron ore and citrus fruits.

The Consumer Price Index (IPC-M), which comprises 30% of the IGP-M, grew by 0.30%, a reduction from June’s 0.46%.

This change, driven by the Food group, shifted from a 0.96% increase to a 0.84% decrease, indicating a notable slowdown in consumer inflation.
