Brazilian police claim Bolsonarista stabbed Lula da Silva supporter after political dispute

According to Brazilian police, a supporter of Jair Bolsonaro stabbed a supporter of former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (2003-2011) to death Wednesday night in the town of Confresa in the central-western state of Mato Grosso.

“The victim was defending Lula da Silva, the perpetrator was defending Bolsonaro,” Civil Police Commissioner Victor Oliveira said, according to the G1 website.

The perpetrator, identified as Rafael Silva de Oliveira, is 22 years old and allegedly killed the victim, Bendito Cardoso dos Santos, 44, with knives and axes, police said.

The incident occurred on a rural farm where the two men cut firewood together and began with a heated argument over politics.

According to police, Dos Santos allegedly punched Oliveira in the face and immediately reached for a knife, but the perpetrator reacted and yanked the knife away.

Oliveira chased Dos Santos and stabbed him in the back, neck, and head.

Shortly after, he went to a nearby cabin where he took an axe and cut the victim’s neck, says the police.

The perpetrator hid the murder weapons and went on foot to the town of Confresa to seek treatment at a hospital for a cut on his hand and another on his head; he claimed he had been robbed.

The suspect was taken to a police station, where he apparently changed his mind, suddenly confessed to the crime, and was arrested for murder; he is now in custody.

If this version proves to be true, it is the first official politically motivated death amid Brazil’s election campaign.
