Brazilian Hotel Association predicts high occupancy during Carnival

A survey by the Brazilian Association of Hotel Industry (ABIH) shows that the occupancy rate of beds in the hotel network in the country during the Carnival holiday should be high, especially in states with a tradition of revelry.

“We are already reaching good rates, but they tend to increase until Friday (17), the beginning of Carnival, because national tourists leave their reservations for the last minute,” said the entity president, Manoel Linhares.

In the southeast, Rio de Janeiro, the capital city of Rio de Janeiro, one of the main carnival destinations in the country, is expected to have an 85% occupancy rate, with expectations of reaching something close to 100% during the days of revelry.

The Região dos Lagos also stands out and should reach 100% occupancy.

In Costa Verde, Paraty, and Angra dos Reis, occupancy should be military.

For those who intend to escape the carnival, cities in the Serrana and Centro-Sul regions of Rio de Janeiro, are expected to be over 85%.

In São Paulo, inland and coastal destinations have rates close to 95%, while in the capital, they are around 55%.

Espírito Santo (90%) and Minas Gerais, especially Belo Horizonte (62%), will also have good bed occupancy.

Pernambuco, Bahia, and Rio Grande do Norte states are close to 100% occupancy.

Then come Sergipe (90%), Alagoas (83%), Ceará and Maranhão (80%), Paraíba (75%) and Piauí (69%).

In the Midwest region, the state of Goiás also presents encouraging numbers, according to ABIH.

The cities of Caldas Novas (100%), Rio Quente (98%), Pirenópolis (90%), and Aruanã (70%) are the highlights, while the capital Goiânia should stay at 45%, the same number as the state of Mato Grosso.

In Mato Grosso do Sul, with the tourist highlight Bonito, the expectation is 85%.

In the capital, Campo Grande, the occupation rate is 40%.

In Brasília, the occupancy rate in the hotel network is expected to be only 25%.

In the North Region, more specifically in Acre, the hotel occupancy rate should reach 70%.

Pará’s interior is at the same level, with the capital Belém staying at 15%.

In Amapá, 40% of the apartments are expected to be occupied, while in Tocantins, occupancy should reach 30%.

In the South of the country, the hotel chains that cover the beaches of Rio Grande do Sul are working with the expectation of reaching 100% occupancy, while Gramado and Canela, in the countryside of Rio Grande do Sul, is expected to stay at 80%.

Another tourist city in the region, Bento Gonçalves, can check 70%.

In Santa Catarina, Florianópolis expects close to 100% of hotels to be occupied, followed by Costa Verde & Mar (90%), Vale do Contestado, and Caminho dos Príncipes (80%), and Caminhos do Alto Vale (78%).

In Paraná, the estimate is to reach 60%.

“In the first Carnival after the pandemic, we are reaching rates close to Carnival 2020. The recovery of the national hotel industry, however, is not yet consolidated and will be slow because during the pandemic period, 80% of the hotels were closed, and the 20% that remained in operation recorded occupancy between 5% and 8%,” said Linhares.
