Brazilian Congress focuses on committee activities this week
This week, the activities in the Chamber of Deputies will primarily revolve around the committees of the National Congress. One key focus will be the Mixed Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPMI) investigating the events of January 8.
Former aide to Jair Bolsonaro, Mauro Cid, who has been under arrest since May 3, will be questioned regarding messages and documents found on his phone related to fraudulent activities.
These messages, made public by Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), suggest the planning of a coup involving the declaration of a state of siege, suspension of the constitutional order, potential removal of TSE ministers, and the call for new elections.
Dialogues between Cid and other military personnel were also discovered, presenting justifications for a possible coup.
Aside from the CPMI, there will be a session in the National Congress on Tuesday to analyze several presidential vetoes.
There are no plans for a deliberative session in the House’s plenary, so the deputies will primarily participate in committee meetings.
On Tuesday, committees like Public Safety and Combating Organized Crime, Sports, Health, Agriculture, Livestock, Supply and Rural Development, and Industry, Trade, and Services will deliberate on various issues.
These include cross-border crime, pedestrian and cyclist safety measures, healthcare system treatment for Dystonia, and the implications of the European Union’s deforestation regulation.
Throughout the week, various committees will debate and vote on legislative proposals encompassing multiple areas, including disabilities rights, industry, commerce, services, administration, public service, transport, science, technology, innovation, and economic development.
Additional topics under discussion include consumer defense, foreign affairs, national defense, elderly rights, financial inspection, sports, social security, assistance, childhood, adolescence, family, and culture.
On Thursday, there will be no committee activities.
In the Senate, a deliberative session will be on Tuesday and Wednesday, addressing topics such as the Full-Time School Program, school councils, technical professional training, access to scholarships, ozone therapy, and employment relationships within religious confessions.
Throughout the week, senators will also participate in committee work.
