Brazil sets a record for name and gender changes in 2022

Since the decision of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) in June 2018, which recognized the right of transgender and transexual people to match their perceived identity to their real identity in their identification documents, it is the first time that Brazil recorded in one semester the highest number of people who changed their name and gender in a Civil Registry Office.

In the first six months of 2022, there were 1,124 changes, 43.7% more than last year, with 782 registrations.

In São Paulo state alone, the first half of 2022 ranks second with the most name and sex changes since 2018. The number is 23.5% higher than the one registered in 2021.

The new legislation allows the process of gender name change to be carried out at the Civil Registry Offices with the need to present all personal documents, proof of address, and certificates from the civil, state, and federal criminal distributors of the place of residence for the last five years, as well as the state and federal criminal execution certificates, the Protest Notary Offices, and the Labor Court.

Regulated by Provision 73 of the National Council of Justice (CNJ), the decision foresees the possibility of changing name and gender without the need for gender reassignment surgery and judicial authorization, just by going to the Civil Registry Offices all over the country.
