By · November 12, 2021 · 3 min read

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The city of Rio de Janeiro ranked as the second most popular destination among the 145 places listed as Unesco World Heritage Sites.

It was the scene of over 45 million posts on Instagram, second only to Rome. The survey was conducted by UK company Design Bundles, which recently analyzed how many times each place was tagged on the social network and ranked them accordingly.

Rio de Janeiro is still beautiful, and increasingly “Instagrammable.”

In addition to the Marvelous City, another Brazilian representative did well on the web: Brasília is in 8th place, with 13.27 million posts.

The world organization uses criteria such as historic buildings, important paintings and sculptures and notable archeological attractions to choose a World Heritage Site.

Ten countries concentrate most of the Unesco World Heritage Sites in their territory, with Italy standing out, home to 58 of them. Rome alone has been tagged in over 61 million Instagram posts.
