Rio de Janeiro Governor Wilson Witzel Tests Positive for Covid-19

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The governor of Rio de Janeiro, Wilson Witzel, announced on Tuesday, April 14th, that he has tested positive for Covid-19.

On Twitter, he said he had not been feeling well since last Friday, April 10th, and asked to take the test. “Today, the result came back positive,” he said.

On video, Witzel reports that he felt feverish, he had a sore throat and loss of smell, but that he is now feeling well and will continue working from the Laranjeiras Palace, the state government’s official seat. “I will continue working, albeit upholding the restrictions and medical recommendations,” he said.

He also emphasized that the population should remain at home “because the disease can affect anyone and the contagion is fast”.

On Monday, April 13th, Witzel published a new decree extending the state’s quarantine until April 30th. Rio de Janeiro records 3,221 confirmed cases and 182 deaths. The state is the second most affected by the disease, behind only São Paulo.
