In the aftermath of the widespread violent unrest in France earlier this summer, a considerable proportion of the French populace is reportedly expressing doubts over President Emmanuel Macron’s ability to ensure public order.

Despite his public emphasis on the need for order, a significant number of French citizens are not convinced.

A recent survey conducted by the CSA Institute for CNEWS reveals that 70% of respondents do not trust Macron’s capacity to restore, uphold, and preserve public order.

This doubt persists even after the President’s commitment to do so following six nights of civil unrest impacting over 220 towns and cities across the nation, causing damage exceeding 1 billion euros (US$1.1 billion).

Distrust in Macron’s abilities extends across all age groups, with the highest skepticism found amongst those aged 35-49 years (78%) and 25-34 years (76%).

Among the older population aged 50-64 years and those above 65, 63% and 62%, respectively, also reported a lack of trust. Notably, the lowest level of mistrust was among the youngest demographic, aged 18-24, at 59%.

The belief that Macron is incapable of managing such social upheavals spreads across the political spectrum.

For instance, 81% of the supporters of Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s La France Insoumise do not believe in Macron’s ability to guarantee public order.

This skepticism is echoed by voters of Eric Zemmour’s Reconquista and Marine Le Pen’s National Rally, with 93% and 92% respectively sharing similar sentiments.
