Best banks in the world in 2023: Sofisa leads the list in Brazil
The best tool a bank can offer its customers is trust.
After the Covid-19 pandemic, with falling interest rates and the failure of giants like Silicon Valley Bank, assessing which institutions deserve to look after your money has become much more complex.
“If you can’t trust your financial institution, all the other advantages and services diminish,” says Parijat Banerjee, global head of business services at LatentView Analytics.
In the annual ranking of the best banks in the world, prepared by Forbes in partnership with the market research company Statista, 415 institutions are listed.
Among them, ten are Brazilian, with Sofisa as the best-placed bank, followed by Nubank and Sicoob.
Despite their strong presence in the domestic market, institutions such as Banco do Brasil, Bradesco, and Itaú did not make this year’s list.
Of the more traditional names, only Caixa Econômica and Santander appear in the ranking.
Online banking is at the top in many countries, reflecting the pandemic impact on customers’ digital comfort.
In Brazil, it’s no different. In addition to Nubank, C6 Bank and PagBank also gained prominence.
The survey was conducted with 48,000 banking customers in 32 countries, considering categories such as digital services, customer service, financial advice, and, of course, trust.

Among the 75 on the list, the United Services Automobile Association (USAA) took the top spot in the United States.
The second place was given to Union Bank & Trust (UBT), and Liberty Bank won the third position.
In Germany, the number of qualifiers totaled 25, with Sparda-Bank Hessen in the first place.
ING Group and N26 rounded out the German top three.
EQ Bank was the big winner in Canada, followed by Tangerine and Simplii Financial.
In total, ten financial institutions from the country entered the ranking.
In France, N26 was considered the best bank in the country.
Boursorama Banque came in second place, and Monabanq was third.
In Italy, Illimity was the respondents’ darling, while in the UK, the position was won by First Direct.
In Japan, Sbi Sumishin Net Bank (SBI) won as the best bank in the country.
