Dollar closes below R$5 for the first time since June 2021
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – With the help of commodities and high interest rates, the dollar closed below R$5 for the first time since June last year. The stock market recovered from recent losses and exceeded 116 thousand points – the highest level in six months.
The trading dollar closed at R$ 4.945 on Monday (21), down R$ 0.071 (1.42%). At the beginning of the day, the price was almost stable but began to fall as soon as the North American market opened negotiations. At the day’s high at 12:20, the dollar reached R$4.93.
With yesterday’s performance, the US currency recorded a decline of 4.1% in March. In 2022, the decline reaches 11.3%.

The day was also marked by euphoria in the stock market. Ibovespa index B3 ended the day with a gain of 0.73% at 116,154 points. The indicator rose with the help of commodity-exporting companies and banks. The Brazilian stock market is at its highest level since September 14 last year.
The appreciation of commodities due to the war between Russia and Ukraine is helping foreign currencies to enter Brazil. At the same time, investors are still reflecting on the increase in the Selic rate (prime rate of the economy) last week. Higher interest rates in emerging markets attract foreign capital.
The intensification of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine led to a renewed increase in commodity prices. The barrel of Brent crude, which had fallen below US$100 at the end of last week, rebounded since last Friday (18th) to close at US$116 this Monday.
