Brazil election 2022: Bolsonaro’s party will hire audit for the election

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On May 5, President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said in his weekly live video that his party should hire an auditing company to “ensure elections free of any suspicion and free of external interest.”

“I advance to the TSE: this audit will not be done after the elections. Once hired, the company will start working and will ask the TSE, for sure, for a large amount of information,” he said.

The TSE (Superior Electoral Court) audits all phases of the voting. Political parties can participate in the process.

Bolsonaro also raised the possibility of the company refusing to do the work: “But it (the company) can say that it is impossible to audit and not accept to do the work.”

The president did not give any further information about the company he intends to hire, nor the service that will be performed. He only said that the idea has already been discussed with the president of the party, Valdemar Costa Neto.

CIA

Also in the live broadcast, Bolsonaro denied having received recommendations on the elections from the president of the CIA (United States Intelligence Agency), William Burns.

According to the Reuters news agency, in July 2021, Burns told senior Brazilian government officials that Bolsonaro should stop questioning the legitimacy of the Brazilian electoral system.

On May 5, the chief executive said it would be “extremely inelegant” for a CIA chief to come to Brazil to “deliver a message.” Bolsonaro said that the report is a lie, made to “create a narrative planted outside of Brazil when the Armed Forces were invited to participate in the electoral process.”

The minister of the GSI (Institutional Security Cabinet), General Augusto Heleno, also participated in the live broadcast and confirmed having met with members of the CIA in July. On that occasion, according to the general, they talked about the intelligence area and not about elections.
