Brazil gets the world’s first air bridge with biometric boarding

The airlift between the two Brazilian mega-cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, only 360 km away from each other, is not only one of the busiest routes in the world but also functions almost like a commuter train.

More than 120 flights operate daily between the two cities, with an average of one flight every 10 minutes, between the hours of 06:00 and 22:00, turning these two cities into a single giant playground for those who can afford it. And many can and do.

The airbridge links the two city airports so that the passenger can be very fast in the center of action of each city. Therefore, fast and convenient check-in and check-out make a lot of sense on this route.

Later this month, travelers on domestic flights departing from Congonhas (SP) and Santos Dumont (RJ) airports will see the installation, testing, and commissioning of the biometric system for passengers and crew.

When São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are the origin and destination cities, users will take advantage of the world’s first biometric air bridge. The process of finally implementing the technology is already underway, gradually and simultaneously, at São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro airports.

In recent months, tests have been conducted with crew members on board. The idea is that the system is gaining more and more followers and that in the future, almost all passenger handling will be done this way.

As part of the system’s inauguration, Infrastructure Minister Marcelo Sampaio will lead a federal government commission to review the work progress at Congonhas at 9:30 a.m. today (9).

Among others, the president of Infraero, Brigadier Helio Paes de Barros Júnior, the CEO of Serpro, Gileno Barreto, the National Secretary of Civil Aviation, Ronei Glanzmann, and the CEO of the National Civil Aviation Authority (Anac), Juliano Noman, and representatives of the National Commission of Airport Authorities (Conaero) will be present.
