Brazil announces return to the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this Thursday (5th) that Brazil has once again become part of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), made up of all 33 countries.

In a note, the Itamaraty recalled that Brazil participated directly in the creation of the body in 2008.

The entity promotes “political dialogue, consultation and regional cooperation on a wide range of topics, including food and energy security, health, social inclusion, sustainable development, digital transformation and infrastructure for integration.”

Brazil left CELAC two years ago, during the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL). “Brazil’s return to the Latin American community of States is an indispensable step towards the recomposition of our diplomatic heritage and for the country’s full reinsertion into the international community,” said the folder.

The president of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, who holds the presidency of the forum, invited president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to participate in the VII Summit of Heads of State and Government of CELAC, to be held in Buenos Aires on 24 January.
