Brazil Announces Eradication of Newcastle Disease, Plans Global Trade Resumption

In a significant stride towards resuming its international poultry trade, Brazil has officially declared the eradication of the Newcastle disease.

This announcement comes from a commercial aviary in Anta Gorda, Rio Grande do Sul.

The Brazilian government will announce this resolution to the OIE on Thursday. This announcement will mark the end of an intense period of surveillance and control.

After conducting five tests, all of which returned negative results for the virus, the authorities are confident about lifting the previously imposed trade restrictions.

In addition, these developments hinge on approvals from each importing country’s sanitary authorities.

Carlos Goulart, Secretary of Agricultural Defense at the Ministry of Agriculture, explained the situation. He said, “It’s challenging to predict how foreign sanitary authorities will respond.

However, through skilled negotiation, we intend to demonstrate that our data is reliable enough for them to reconsider their stances.”

The journey towards normalcy doesn’t stop with the eradication. Brazil had suspended issuing export certifications to 42 countries, adhering to strict health protocols.

With the disease contained within a 10-kilometer radius and extensive disinfection measures in place, the next steps involve detailed negotiations with individual countries.

In addition, these negotiations aim to resume exports. Brazil’s proactive measures include maintaining rigorous health protocols and continuous monitoring.

Marcelo de Andrade Mota, Director of the Department of Animal Health, noted, “We have completed the initial surveillance phase. We will now introduce sentinel birds to ensure the virus is no longer present in the region.”

The case of China highlights the specific challenges and procedures involved in resuming trade.

Navigating Challenges and Diplomatic Efforts

Upon successful containment, Brazil must submit a comprehensive dossier to China’s General Administration of Customs to obtain the green light for resuming exports.

Unlike other nations, China does not allow regionalization in its protocols for avian diseases, meaning any decision affects the entire country.

Moreover, in preparation for broader discussions, Brazil is scheduled to meet with nations across the American continent.

The focus will be on those most sensitive to Newcastle disease, with the goal of pushing for a swift review and reopening of trade routes.
