Significant Drop in Illegal Mining Shields Brazil’s Yanomami Land

In Brazil’s dense forests, a crucial victory emerges in the Yanomami Indigenous Territory, the country’s largest indigenous reserve near Venezuela.

In just six months, illegal mining activities plummeted by 75 percent. This result stems from a focused military effort to halt environmental devastation caused by unchecked mineral extraction.

Illegal mining strips land and pollutes rivers, disrupting the Yanomami communities’ basic sustenance.

With President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s inauguration in early 2023, Brazil’s military—comprising the Army, Navy, and Air Force—intensified operations.

They targeted gold and diamond prospectors using harmful techniques, including mercury in river waters.

This intervention dramatically reduced illicit mining operations within the indigenous territory.

Alerts about such activities dropped from 219.67 hectares in the first half of 2023 to just 53.67 hectares by mid-2024.

Moreover, the operations expelled more than 20,000 individuals engaged in illegal mining.

Additionally, the Brazilian Ministry of Defense collaborated with the Ministry of Health. They addressed severe malnutrition among the Yanomami due to poisoned food sources.

Over 1,000 indigenous people received aid, demonstrating the operation’s comprehensive approach.

The reduction in illegal mining also improved the water quality in the region’s rivers. On July 20th, the military dismantled two major illegal mining camps and seized 1,200 kilograms of cassiterite, known as “black gold.”

These efforts not only safeguard the Yanomami‘s environmental health and cultural heritage but also underscore the importance of governance in enforcing environmental laws.
