Brazil: 52% disapprove and 37% approve of Bolsonaro’s government, approval among evangelicals grows

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Jair Bolsonaro’s (Liberal Party – PL) government is disapproved by 52% and approved by 37% of the Brazilian electorate, shows a PowerData poll conducted from June 5 to June 7, 2022.

The rates registered stability in the last 15 days, oscillating within the margin of error of 2 percentage points.

The disapproval rate varied 2 percentage points down from the last survey. It suggests a downward trend: in the last round, conducted from May 22 to 24, it was 54%; a month ago, it was 56%.

On the other hand, the approval percentage oscillated 1 point downwards in the last two weeks. It has been in the 35% to 38% range since the beginning of March.

With the results, the difference between approval and disapproval is 15 percentage points. It was already 36 p.p. in the passage from August to September last year. Two weeks ago, it was 16 p.p.

DEMOGRAPHIC HIGHLIGHTS

Those living in the Northeast (65%), the young (63%), and those with higher education (64%) are the most disapproving of the Bolsonaro administration.

BOLSONARO’S WORK

PoderData also asked the interviewees about their evaluation of Jair Bolsonaro’s work. For 51%, the president’s performance is “bad” or “terrible”. The rate is the same as 15 days ago. The “excellent” or “good” rate is 31%. Those who evaluate him as “regular” add up to 16%.

It is the first time since March this year that the “good” or “excellent” rate is above 30%. It oscillated 2 points up compared to the last survey – within the margin of error.

GAP: 20 P.P.

The gap between those who think Bolsonaro’s work is “bad” or “terrible” and those who evaluate him as “great” or “good” is 20 percentage points. A fortnight ago, this gap was 22 p.p. The largest gap was 35 p.p in November 2021.

STRATIFICATION

• gender – men (51%) and women (51%) consider Bolsonaro’s job “bad” or “terrible”;
• age – for 39% of seniors aged 60 or more, the president’s performance is “great” or “good”;
• region – those who live in the Northeast (64%) are the ones who most evaluate the president’s work as “bad” or “terrible”;
• family income – the rate of good/very good is lower (24%) among those who earn up to two minimum wages or are unemployed.

APPROVAL AMONG EVANGELICALS GROWS

The same survey shows that 54% of evangelical voters approve of Bolsonaro’s government. That number has grown 7 points since the survey two weeks earlier.

Those who disapprove of the Bolsonaro administration in this religious stratum are 32%, a drop of 12 points since the last round of the survey.

Approval of the government in the evangelical group is 17 percentage points above the general population, of which 37% approve and 52% disapprove of the federal administration.

The PowerData asks respondents every 15 days about which religion they most identify with. In this round, 40% declared themselves Catholic and 35% Evangelical.

Bolsonaro continues to have a higher approval rating among evangelicals than among Catholics (31%).

CATHOLICS

Approval of the government among Catholic voters swung 6 points downwards compared to the round conducted from May 22 to 24, 2022. Now, 31% approve, while 63% disapprove. Another 6% could not answer.

The disapproval rate in this group reached 68% at the beginning of the year. This curve showed a gradual downward trend from February to the end of May. However, in this round, it went up again.

The curves show that Bolsonaro has worsened among Catholics and improved among Evangelicals in the last 15 days.
