Bolsonaro’s PL Secures Key Committee Chairs in the Chamber

The distribution of power in Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies took shape with the selection of thematic committee chairs.

Out of 30 committees, 19 have chosen their leaders, with Bolsonaro’s PL taking charge of key ones.

Caroline de Toni (PL-SC) will lead the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ), while Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) heads the Education Committee.

PL also retained the Public Security Committee chairmanship, a position aligned with its priorities, through Deputy Alberto Fraga (PL-DF).

The PT, President Lula’s party, secured the Health Committee chairmanship, a significant role given its budgetary influence.

The CCJ, the chamber’s most influential committee, will be led by PL, as agreed with Chamber President Arthur Lira.

This position controls the legislative agenda, including government project reviews and constitutional amendments.

Despite opposition, Lira’s endorsement solidified PL’s leadership, even gaining tacit support from PT members.

The Education Committee saw contention with Nikolas Ferreira’s appointment.

Known for his staunch Bolsonarist stance, Ferreira faced attempted blockades from PT members, which ultimately failed.

The Health Committee became a coveted position, with PT’s chairmanship allowing it to direct significant funds to healthcare initiatives.

Alberto Fraga, a former colonel and advocate for gun rights, was chosen to lead the Public Security Committee, highlighting PL’s agenda.

Other committees have also elected their chairs, covering various sectors from labor to human rights.

These appointments mark the beginning of the legislative year, setting the stage for policy directions and potential shifts in government priorities.
