Between NATO and Russia: Poland’s Push for Nuclear Deterrence

Polish President Andrzej Duda asked the United States to station nuclear weapons on Polish soil. The request comes as Russia and Ukraine remain locked in conflict, with differing views on what caused the war and what might end it.

“The borders of NATO moved east in 1999, so NATO infrastructure should also shift east,” Duda stated in his Financial Times interview. Poland shares borders with Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia’s Kaliningrad territory.

Russian officials responded that such weapons placement would make Polish facilities “targets” in any potential conflict. Russia previously deployed tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus in 2023, citing security concerns about NATO’s eastern presence.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recently outlined conditions for peace talks with Ukraine. These include Ukraine maintaining neutral status, addressing what Russia terms “denazification,” and guarantees for Russian-speaking populations.

Lavrov stated these terms reflect Russia’s security interests in the region. Some analysts note that Russia has consistently cited NATO expansion as a security threat.

Following the Soviet Union’s collapse, NATO added 14 eastern European countries between 1999 and 2020. Russian leadership has stated this expansion contradicted verbal assurances given during German reunification negotiations.

Poland’s Military Modernization & Nuclear Talks

Poland continues military modernization efforts alongside its nuclear hosting request. The country awaits delivery of 32 F-35 stealth jets capable of carrying nuclear weapons. Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed Poland is also discussing potential nuclear protection with France.

European nations and Russia present contrasting narratives about the conflict’s origins. European leaders generally view Russia’s actions as unprovoked aggression against a sovereign neighbor. Russian leadership maintains NATO’s approach to Ukraine created unacceptable security risks for Moscow.

Military analysts observe that introducing nuclear weapons closer to Russia’s borders could increase regional tensions. Diplomatic efforts continue despite disagreement about preconditions for meaningful peace negotiations.

The situation highlights the challenge of reconciling fundamentally different security perspectives between Russia and NATO members. Each side views its actions as defensive while seeing the other’s moves as potentially threatening.
