Bank account of British politician Nigel Farage closed by Coutts over ideological differences

Religious and political liberties, First Amendment rights, and philanthropic freedoms are under attack.

The unfortunate reality is that ideological cancellations are occurring alarmingly and are reported more frequently but often go unreported.

A while ago the 1792 Exchange organization assessed 1,000+ companies to determine the likelihood a company would cancel a contract or client or boycott, divest, or deny services based on views or beliefs.

Released through the “Spotlight Report” on the organization’s website, the ranking considers “more than a thousand policies, practices, and other relevant criteria” to pinpoint each company’s position.

The latest prominent example is UK politician Nigel Farage’s, whose bank accounts have been closed by the long-standing British bank Coutts, citing the discrepancy between Farage’s viewpoints and the bank’s institutional values.

Coutts, established in 1657 and a part of NatWest Group plc, determined that Farage’s public views, including his position on Brexit and associations with Donald Trump and tennis player Novak Djokovic, were not in line with the bank’s inclusive philosophy.

Initial media reports by BBC and the Financial Times suggested the closure of Farage’s accounts was due to falling below the bank’s required financial threshold.

However, upon Farage’s request, documents obtained from the bank reiterated his fulfillment of the bank’s economic contribution criteria.

The decision to close Farage’s accounts was made by Coutts’ reputational risk committee.

In minutes from a 2022 meeting, the committee stated that Farage’s public views were incompatible with the bank’s position as an inclusive organization.

Farage disputes the bank’s decision, arguing the real motive was political.

He points to the frequent mentions of Brexit and Trump in the report to back his claim.

Farage has also criticized the bank for what he describes as surveillance of his personal and political life, describing the report as a “pre-trial brief.”

Despite the ongoing dispute, Farage maintains that the role of a company should focus on returning dividends to shareholders and conducting its core business.
