Argentina’s S&P MERVAL Climbs as Local Stocks Outperform Regional Peers

Trading volumes remained moderate as investors digested recent economic data and global cues. The market outperformed regional peers, with Brazil’s Ibovespa falling 1.31% and U.S. indices posting smaller gains.

Market participants focused on the latest economic indicators and company results. Grupo Financiero Galicia led the winners with a 1.2% gain, supported by strong loan growth and earnings. Banco Macro added 2.4% as investors favored its dividend yield.

Banco BBVA Argentina gained 1.7% on market share advances, while Banco Patagonia surged 4.1% after value-driven buying. Grupo Supervielle rose 3.2% as sector rotation favored financials.

On the downside, Domec SA dropped 7.29% following weak earnings. Polledo SA lost 2.62% due to poor results and low liquidity. Sociedad Comercial del Plata fell 2.26% after missing earnings expectations.

Instituto Rosenbuch declined 1.92% amid health sector weakness. Bolsas y Mercados Argentinos slipped 1.77% as investors took profits.

Technical analysis based on the daily and four-hour charts reveals a market at a crossroads. The daily chart shows the MERVAL consolidating after a multi-month decline, with price action hovering near key moving averages.

The 200-day simple moving average (SMA) acts as major support around 2,051,922 points, while resistance stands at 2,202,586 points. The 4-hour chart indicates a short-term bullish momentum, with the index breaking above several moving averages.

The MACD histogram on both timeframes shows positive momentum building, though the daily remains below zero, suggesting caution. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) on the daily chart reads 52.10, indicating neutral momentum.

On the four-hour chart, RSI approaches 60, signaling the market nears overbought territory. Bollinger Bands on both charts have narrowed, reflecting reduced volatility and a possible impending breakout.

Fundamentals remain mixed. Official data shows economic activity rose 7.7% year-on-year in April, the strongest in three years. However, persistent capital outflows and inflation continue to pressure the peso and market sentiment.

The S&P MERVAL’s recent strength highlights local resilience in the face of regional weakness. Investors watch for a confirmed breakout above resistance to signal a sustained rally. Until then, caution prevails as political and economic uncertainties linger.
