RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Argentina’s Minister of Health, Carla Vizzotti, said this Friday, March 19, that there is a possibility that in the coming weeks the country will be immersed in a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We are starting to see in almost all jurisdictions a trend of increasing cases. […] The second wave is a concrete possibility in Argentina, we have to prepare ourselves”, informed Vizzotti during a press conference.

During the Federal Health Council, the country’s health situation was analyzed and it was confirmed that the Government’s central premises are to “minimize the entry of new strains” of the virus and to obtain vaccines to immunize the population.

“From the Council we discourage tourist trips abroad, except for those that are essential, due to the risk of getting sick and bringing a variant of the virus”, commented the Minister.

At the meeting it was concluded that the health policy that the government has implemented so far is the one that should dictate the parameters of what or what not to do during the next phases of the pandemic.

“In the region, in most of our neighboring countries we see an increase of cases in a rather accelerated way. Borders in Argentina for foreigners are closed, tourism from neighboring countries was closed on December 24, land borders are also closed”, explained Vizzotti when referring to the measures taken by the Government to avoid the arrival of infected people.

This Friday a new batch of 330,000 doses of the Russian vaccine Sputnik V arrived in Argentina to advance the inoculation plan against the coronavirus. On March 18, the Argentine Government registered 8,328 new cases of coronavirus and 155 deaths.
