Angola’s Big Shift in Energy Strategy; Infrastructure Over Production

Angola is changing gears in its energy sector, pivoting from just pumping up production to spreading power more effectively.

President João Lourenço recently announced this strategic shift, emphasizing a stronger focus on enhancing energy transport and distribution networks.

The spotlight on infrastructure comes as Angola grapples with a fragmented energy network; only 10 out of 18 provinces are connected.

Lourenço’s goal? To expand access to energy across the entire nation, ensuring every citizen benefits from this critical resource.

Lourenço’s vision includes massive projects like the construction of the Caculo Cabaça dam and two others in the Kwanza basin.

These aren’t small numbers; they’re expected to add about 1,800 megawatts to the grid.

The Kwanza basin alone could eventually pump out at least 7,000 megawatts, with hopes of even exporting excess power to neighboring countries.

Addressing Water Shortages

But it’s not just about electricity. The region faces severe water shortages too. New projects are gearing up in Huíla province and other areas to tackle this issue.

Funding is locked in for these ambitious projects, including several aimed at fighting drought in the southern parts of the country.

By 2025, major infrastructure like the Cafu Canal in Cunene province should be complete, promising relief and resilience.

Lourenço is also urging big agricultural players to step up. Particularly, he emphasizes the importance of maintaining roads for better market access.

His message is clear: everyone needs to pitch in, improving infrastructure to boost both production and living standards.

This holistic approach to development in Angola aims not just to power homes but also to power economic growth and elevate living conditions.
