After 44 years of operations in Argentina, Itaú has announced the sale of its operations in the country amidst an economic crisis, high inflation, and changes in the political landscape with the upcoming presidential elections.

On August 23, in an official statement, the institution reported the sale of its shares in Argentina to Banco Macro for R$250 million (US$50 million).

Banco Itaú Unibanco S.A. is a Brazilian financial services company headquartered in São Paulo, the largest in Latin America and the seventy-first largest bank in the world.

With this transaction, the Argentine bank is expected to become the largest private financial institution in the country.

Itaú stated that it is expected to register a negative impact of R$1.2 billion with the sale after completing the transaction.

This announcement comes after 44 years of operations in Argentina, and Itaú has announced the sale of its operations as part of a broader strategy to navigate the challenging economic environment.

However, even after the sale, the institution stated it would continue serving local and regional corporate clients through its international units.

The institution also said it would “Submit for approval to the regulatory entities in Argentina and Brazil a request to open a representative office in Argentina, which will conduct activities permitted by its license and by the other conditions of the purchase and sale agreement”.

This move by Itaú reflects the challenging economic environment in Argentina and the bank’s strategy to minimize its exposure while still maintaining a presence to serve its corporate clients.

It also underlines the dynamic nature of the banking sector in Latin America as institutions adapt to changing economic and political conditions.
