Vehicle production in Brazil rises 6.8% in May

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The production of vehicles increased by 6.8% in May compared to the same month of 2021, according to the balance sheet of the National Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (Anfavea) published today (7). In May this year, 205.9 thousand units were produced, an increase of 10.7% over April.

From January to May, 888.1 thousand vehicles were produced, down 9.5% compared to the first five months of 2021.

According to Anfavea president Márcio de Lima Leite, automakers struggle to maintain their production lines due to a global shortage of components.

“The semiconductor problem still exists. Slowly, the situation has not normalized, but it has become less critical. But it is still a big challenge for fabs to maintain production levels,” he said in presenting the data.

SALES

Sales of new vehicles decreased slightly by 0.9% in May compared to the same month last year. In May, 187.1 thousand units were sold. In the cumulative figures for the first five months of the year, sales of vehicles have shrunk by 17% compared to the same period in 2021, with the sale of 740,000 units.

Sales of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles fell by 2.4% in May compared to the same month in 2021, with the sale of 152.8 thousand units, In the cumulative from January to May, 596.6 thousand units were sold, 21.1% less than in the first five months of last year.

The marketing of trucks recorded a decrease of 9.6% in May compared to the same month of 2021, with the sale of 10.4 thousand units. In the cumulative from January to May, sales are down 1.5% compared to the same period last year, with the sale of 46.6 thousand trucks.

EXPORTS

Vehicle exports in May increased by 24.6% compared to the same month last year, with the sale of 46.1 thousand units abroad. In the first five months of the year, exports increased 19.4%, with 198.9 thousand units sold to other countries.

“The year 2022 is very interesting for exports. The challenge is that this is something sustainable,” said Leite.

EMPLOYMENT

The number of employees in the vehicle industry decreased by 2.2% in May compared to the same month in 2021, with 101.8 thousand workers currently employed by car manufacturers.
