Vale Overtakes Petrobras as Brazil’s Top Dividend Payer in Q3 2024

Vale, the Brazilian mining giant, has taken the crown as Brazil’s top dividend payer in the third quarter of 2024. The company distributed an impressive R$ 10.5 billion ($1.8 billion) to its shareholders between July and September. This payout surpassed that of Petrobras, the previous leader in dividend payments.

The shift in leadership comes at a time when global dividend payments have reached new heights. According to the Janus Henderson Global Dividend Index report, worldwide dividend payouts hit a record $431.1 billion in Q3 2024. This figure represents a 3.1% increase compared to the same period last year.

Despite Vale’s strong performance, Brazilian companies as a whole saw a decline in dividend payments. The total dividends paid by Brazilian firms amounted to R$ 25.58 billion ($4.4 billion) in Q3 2024. This marks a significant 45% decrease from the previous year’s R$ 46.5 billion ($8 billion) payout.

Vale’s ascension to the top spot in Brazil is noteworthy, but it falls short of global rankings. The company did not secure a position in the world’s top 20 dividend payers. Chinese firms dominated the global list, with China Construction Bank Corporation CCB leading the pack. The bank distributed an astounding $13.5 billion to its investors during the quarter.

Other major players in the global dividend arena included China Mobile Limited and PetroChina. These companies paid out $6.86 billion and $6.83 billion, respectively. Microsoft, the highest-ranking non-Chinese firm, came in fourth with a $5.57 billion dividend payment.

The rise of Chinese companies in dividend payments is significant. They accounted for approximately 10% of all dividends paid globally in Q3 2024. This represents a 15.4% increase from the previous year, highlighting China’s growing influence in the global financial landscape.

Janus Henderson’s report suggests that the trend of increasing dividend payments may continue. The firm projects total global dividends for 2024 to reach $1.73 trillion. This forecast, while slightly lower than previous estimates, still indicates strong corporate profitability worldwide.

The report also points to potential growth in dividend payments from tech giants. Companies like Alphabet, which owns Google, have substantial cash reserves. These reserves could pave the way for increased shareholder returns in the future.
