United Nations Talent Outreach Mission Comes to Rio de Janeiro This Week

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – This Wednesday, June 26th, and Thursday, June 27th, the United Nations Talent Outreach Mission will be coming to Rio de Janeiro’s Palácio Itamaraty in search of talented Brazilians who are interested in working for the United Nations.

“Brazil has always played a central role in the United Nations,” comments Maurizio Giuliano, Director of the Information Center for the United Nations in Brazil (UNIC Rio), “both on political issues, peace missions, development and much more.”

He adds, “It is very important to have more Brazilians who can join our organization and be part of our work for a better world, promoting everything that Brazil can offer for a healthier and more sustainable planet.”

At the moment, explains Giuliano, Brazilians working for the UN are relatively few compared to other nationalities. Therefore, the organization has made it a priority to encourage Brazilians to consider a career in the UN.

“This is why the Assistant Secretary-General for Human Resources has decided to send this mission to Brazil,” Giuliano continues. “We really want to work with Brazilian institutions and civil society to promote strong interest for a UN career among Brazilians. The events, of course, are also open for non-Brazilians who may be here.”

To work in the UN, the minimum requirements are to be fluent in English and/or French, to have a Bachelor or Master’s degree, and to be able and willing to work anywhere in the world.

“Also, we also want people who are committed to making a difference to our present and our future,” Giuliano adds. “And people who are willing to persevere for a better world despite setbacks.”

The UN hopes these outreach days will attract both Brazilian students and professionals, and they are keen to state that they are not just looking for those with a background in international relations, but also people working in or studying economics, journalism, engineering, administration, law, psychology, and many other diverse disciplines.

The open days will be presented and conducted in English. Wednesday’s session will begin at 10 AM and is for young professionals: graduates who are already in the labor market or who are still looking for work. On Thursday, the session will begin at 2 PM and is aimed at young people still engaged in academic studies.
