Unemployment in Chile stood at 7.9 percent during the October-December 2022 moving quarter, the Chilean National Statistics Institute (INE) reported yesterday, Monday.

The figure signified an increase of 0.7 percentage points over 12 months, the second annual increase after continuous decreases since February-April 2021.

The increase was due to the rise in the labor force (4.1 percent) above employed persons (3.3 percent).

Meanwhile, the number of unemployed persons increased by 13.8 percent, affected by those who were unemployed and those who were looking for work for the first time.

Both women and men influenced the increase in employed persons.

The sectors that contributed to the increase were transportation, households as employers, and education.

By occupational category, an increase was observed in formal salaried workers, informal salaried workers, and trained service personnel.

At the beginning of January, the President of Chile, Gabriel Boric, announced a package of seven measures to provide economic security to families, including direct monetary contributions.

Chile closed 2022 with accumulated inflation of 12.8 percent, the highest in three decades.
