São Paulo Tests 24-Hour Saturday Metro To Match Its Nightlife Economy

São Paulo likes to market itself as a city that never sleeps, but until now its metro did. On most nights the system shuts around midnight, just as bars fill up, concert crowds spill out and night-shift workers start looking for a way home other than ride-hailing or a bus.

That is the backdrop to a new experiment by the state government: 24-hour metro service from Saturday into Sunday on Lines 1-Blue, 2-Green, 3-Red and 15-Silver, the four routes still operated directly by the state-owned Metrô company.

The pilot, which runs until February, keeps trains moving between 0:00 and 4:40 with intervals of 20 to 30 minutes – enough to offer a real option without pretending that demand at 3 a.m. is the same as rush hour.

São Paulo’s Overnight Rail Stress Test

Technically, the system is being stretched but not broken. Sections of Line 2 will run on a single track in both directions so maintenance can continue on the other side.

Line 15, a monorail serving fast-growing eastern districts, will start with free substitute buses overnight while new trains finish testing. Ticket offices stay closed after midnight, pushing passengers toward cards, digital wallets and contactless payments at the gates.

The decision also exposes the fragmented way São Paulo’s rail network has been built. Private Lines 4 and 5 and the regional rail operator will not run overnight, even as the core state lines stay open.

Commuters gain more safety and predictability along the main backbone, but gaps remain at the edges. Behind the scenes, this is less a romantic gesture and more a controlled stress test.

If the numbers on ridership, costs and crime trends support it, the government can expand the model with a concrete case for taxpayers, not just slogans about free rides and endless subsidies.
