If You Only Go to One Place

Carioca da Gema

A small, brick-walled samba house that has been booking live bands on Avenida Mem de Sá since 2000. Doors open at 6.30 pm on Fridays, the happy-hour set starts at 7 pm and the main band at 9.30 pm.

Tonight at a Glance

Pedra do Sal Free open-air roda de samba in Saúde, from about 6 pm; the same roda also runs on Mondays

Carioca da Gema Lapa’s classic samba house; door charge R$35 (US$6.86) on Fridays, main band at 9.30 pm

Rio Scenarium Antique-furnished club on Rua do Lavradio, open 7 pm to 2 am on Fridays; live Brazilian music across three floors

Trapiche Gamboa Long-running port-district samba house; no programme published for tonight, so ring ahead before you travel

Lapa’s street bars Rua do Lavradio and Avenida Mem de Sá fill up from about 9 pm; no cover, no booking, no plan required

Rio’s Friday does not depend on one-off bookings, and that is the point. The weekly samba circuit through Saúde, Lapa and the old port district runs whatever else is or is not on.

The Circuit: When to Go Where

6 pm – Head to Pedra do Sal as the roda starts. It is free and outdoors, the musicians set up on the stone steps, and the crowd spreads into the surrounding streets.

8 pm – Beer and caipirinhas from the vendors around the largo, most of them cash-only. Expect roughly R$8–R$10 (US$1.57–US$1.96) for a large beer and R$15–R$20 (US$2.94–US$3.92) for a caipirinha.

9.30 pm – Short taxi or rideshare to Carioca da Gema in Lapa for the main band. The door is R$35 (US$6.86) on Fridays and Saturdays, R$30 (US$5.88) from Tuesday to Thursday.

Midnight – Walk down Rua do Lavradio to Rio Scenarium, three floors of antique-strewn dance floors. The house closes at 2 am on Fridays, so this is a late stop rather than an all-nighter.

After 1 am – If Trapiche Gamboa has a band on, the old port warehouse is the best dancing in the city. No programme for tonight has been published.

Sunrise – Recover with an água de coco at Posto 9 in Ipanema. The beach kiosks along Leme and Copacabana open early, though hours vary and none of them advertise a fixed time.

Scenes & Sounds

Samba — Friday is the strongest samba night of the week: a free street roda in Saúde and live-band houses in Lapa and the port district. This is the working circuit, not a tourist show. Where: Pedra do Sal, Carioca da Gema, Rio Scenarium, Trapiche Gamboa

Gafieira and choro — Rio Scenarium programmes samba, gafieira and choro across its three floors from Wednesday to Saturday. The upper floors are quieter if you want to hear the band rather than dance to it. Where: Rio Scenarium

MPB — Carioca da Gema books singers rather than cover bands, on a small stage in a room that holds a couple of hundred people. The happy-hour slot at 7 pm is voice and guitar; the main set at 9.30 pm is a full band. Where: Carioca da Gema

Electronic — Thin tonight. Rio’s electronic scene runs on one-off warehouse and beach parties that cluster on Saturdays, and neither Circo Voador nor Fundição Progresso lists a Friday event this week. Where: check Circo Voador and Fundição Progresso listings before travelling

Bossa nova and choro — Bip Bip in Copacabana is the city’s smallest and best-loved jam room, but its regular nights are Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday rather than Friday. Worth knowing about for the rest of your stay. Where: Bip Bip, Copacabana

Theatre and high culture — Nothing on tonight, but two things are worth booking now. Florian Zeller’s “O Filho” opens on 13 August at the Teatro Fernanda Montenegro in the Copacabana Palace, with Gabriel Braga Nunes and Maria Flor; the Theatro Municipal’s ballet stages “O Corsário” from 20 August. Where: Teatro Fernanda Montenegro, Theatro Municipal

Pick Your Night

Date night: Dinner in Santa Teresa, then a table for two at Carioca da Gema for the 9.30 pm band. Book the restaurant; the samba house does not take reservations after 9 pm.

Solo and safe: Start at Pedra do Sal, where the crowd is open and you can stand with a beer and listen. Move to Rio Scenarium later; its multi-floor layout makes arriving alone feel unremarkable.

Dance till late: Rio Scenarium until it closes at 2 am, then Trapiche Gamboa if it has a band on. Nothing in Lapa reliably runs past about 3 am on a winter Friday, so plan your ride home rather than assuming a sunrise.

Meet locals: Pedra do Sal, without question. The Friday roda is a neighbourhood event first and a tourist attraction second, and Cariocas are generous with translations.

Chill and conversation: A corner table at a Botafogo bar such as Comuna or Hocus Pocus. Quieter than Lapa, closer to Zona Sul, and you can actually hear each other.

A quilombo site in the old port district, recognised as Rio cultural heritage, where a free roda de samba plays on the stone steps. The crowd is young, largely local, and spills across the largo and into the surrounding streets.

Tonight: Free open-air roda de samba from about 6 pm. No cover, no booking, outdoors.

Best time: Mondays and Fridays are the two traditional roda nights; Riotur lists music at the site from Thursday to Sunday as well. Arrive by 7 pm for a spot near the musicians.

Cost: Free entry. Street vendors sell beer and caipirinhas; expect roughly R$8–R$10 (US$1.57–US$1.96) and R$15–R$20 (US$2.94–US$3.92). Bring cash.

Address: Largo João da Baiana, off Rua Argemiro Bulcão, Saúde

Instagram: @pedradosaloficial

Getting there: VLT or metro to the Praça Mauá area, then a short walk. A rideshare from Zona Sul is around R$30 (US$5.88) outside surge hours.

Good to know: No booking and nowhere to sit. Wear shoes you can stand on cobbles in, and keep your phone in a front pocket.

Carioca da Gema — Lapa

A samba and choro house that has been running on Avenida Mem de Sá since 2000, in one of the old townhouses that gave Lapa its second life. Small stage, exposed brick, and a crowd that mixes regulars, music students and visitors who did their homework.

Tonight: Doors 6.30 pm, happy-hour voice-and-guitar set at 7 pm, main band at 9.30 pm. The house has not published tonight’s act; check its Instagram on the day.

Best time: Fridays and Saturdays for the full band. Tables are held only until 9 pm, so arrive before then if you want to sit.

Cost: Door charge R$35 (US$6.86) on Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of a public holiday; R$30 (US$5.88) Tuesday to Thursday. Beer and cocktails on top; expect roughly R$12–R$16 (US$2.35–US$3.14) for a beer and R$22–R$28 (US$4.31–US$5.49) for a caipirinha.

Address: Av. Mem de Sá, 79, Lapa/Centro

Getting there: Metro to Cinelândia, then a 10-minute walk. Rideshare pickup on Avenida Mem de Sá is busy and well lit.

Good to know: Tables can be reserved through the venue’s website. Smart-casual is plenty.

Rio Scenarium — Centro/Lapa

Seven rooms over three floors, furnished out of an antiques dealer’s warehouse, with a stated capacity of 2,000. The crowd is more dressed-up and more international than the street rodas, and the sound is the best in Lapa.

Tonight: Open 7 pm to 2 am. Live Brazilian music across the floors; the house does not publish a per-night line-up in advance.

Best time: Wednesday to Saturday only — the house is closed on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays. Saturday adds a feijoada session from noon to 6 pm.

Cost: Entry is ticketed and the price varies by night; buy through the venue’s ticket page rather than relying on a quoted figure. Drinks are charged to a comanda tab settled on the way out.

Address: Rua do Lavradio, 20, Centro

Phone: +55 21 3147-9000

Website: rioscenarium.com.br

Getting there: Metro to Cinelândia, then a five-minute walk down Rua do Lavradio. The street is lively and policed on Friday nights.

Good to know: Book a table online to skip the queue. Dress smart-casual.

Trapiche Gamboa — Saúde/Gamboa

A three-storey 1860s townhouse near Pedra do Sal, open since 2004 and one of the few rooms in the city where the whole floor dances. Less touristed than Rio Scenarium and considerably less polished.

Tonight: No programme has been published for tonight and the listings we can find are years out of date. Ring the house on +55 21 2516-0868 before you travel.

Best time: Friday and Saturday have historically been the main samba nights, with doors from about 7.30 pm and the band on around 10.30 pm. Closing time is variously reported between 1 am and 3 am.

Cost: A couvert is charged at the door and has historically been modest by Lapa standards. We could not confirm a current figure; ask when you call.

Address: Rua Sacadura Cabral, 155, Saúde

Phone: +55 21 2516-0868

Instagram: @trapichegamboa

Getting there: Rideshare is the sensible route from Zona Sul, roughly R$20–R$30 (US$3.92–US$5.88) from Copacabana. The surrounding streets are industrial and empty at night.

Good to know: Over-18s only on Fridays and Saturdays. Order your ride home from inside the building.

Circo Voador — Lapa

The tent-roofed concert hall under the Arcos da Lapa, capacity around 3,000, and the venue most Rio bands want to graduate to. Standing floor, narrow mezzanine, no air conditioning.

Tonight: No event listed for tonight. Check the venue’s own calendar before making the trip.

Best time: The house runs Wednesday to Sunday. Doors are usually two hours before the headliner; get in between 8 pm and 9 pm to avoid the box-office queue.

Cost: Tickets typically run R$60–R$200 (US$11.76–US$39.20) depending on the act. Drinks are on a comanda card; the box office does not always take Pix.

Address: Rua dos Arcos s/n, Lapa

Phone: +55 21 2533-0354

Instagram: @circo_voador

Website: circovoador.com.br

Getting there: Metro to Cinelândia, then about 12 minutes on foot through the Arcos. Traffic on Rua dos Arcos seizes up after 11 pm, so get dropped on Rua do Lavradio.

Good to know: Over-18s on most nights. Buy online; shows sell out.

Theatro Municipal — Centro (Cinelândia)

Rio’s gilded opera house, modelled on the Palais Garnier and still the city’s grandest room. Opera, ballet, classical concerts and the occasional popular-music special.

Tonight: Nothing scheduled. The house is dark this evening.

Best time: The next run is the company ballet’s “O Corsário”, staged from 20 August, with evening performances at 7 pm and matinees at 5 pm and 2 pm on selected dates. Book ahead.

Cost: Varies by production and seat. Prices are published with each run on the theatre’s own site.

Address: Praça Floriano s/n, Cinelândia, Centro

Phone: +55 21 2332-9191

Instagram: @theatromunicipalrj

Website: theatromunicipal.rj.gov.br

Getting there: Metro to Cinelândia; the station exit faces the theatre steps. Rideshare pickup on Praça Floriano is well lit.

Good to know: Smart dress, black tie for galas. Arrive 30 minutes early for the foyer.

Bip Bip — Copacabana

A Copacabana institution the size of a front room, where musicians sit around a table and play unamplified. No stage, no PA, and famously little tolerance for talking over the music.

Tonight: No Friday session is advertised. Its regular nights are choro on Tuesdays, bossa nova on Wednesdays and samba on Sundays.

Best time: Wednesday bossa nova from about 7 pm. There are only a handful of seats, so early is the only way.

Cost: No cover; you pay for what you drink and the musicians pass a hat. Expect roughly R$8–R$12 (US$1.57–US$2.35) for a beer, cash only.

Address: Rua Almirante Gonçalves, 50, Copacabana

Getting there: Metro to Siqueira Campos or Cantagalo, then about 10 minutes on foot. Easy rideshare drop-off on the street outside.

Good to know: No booking and no dress code. Take cash; the bar has never taken cards.

Fundição Progresso — Lapa

A cavernous former foundry next door to Circo Voador, used for touring acts, club nights and cultural programming. When it is full it is one of the best rooms in Rio; when it is empty it is a shed.

Tonight: Nothing listed. The venue’s published calendar currently shows only a handful of dated shows, none of them this week.

Best time: Whenever it has a booking, which is usually a Friday or Saturday. The mezzanine has good sightlines and its own bar.

Cost: Ticket prices are set per show and published with each announcement. Drinks go on a comanda card.

Address: Rua dos Arcos, 24, Lapa

Phone: +55 21 2220-5070

Instagram: @fundicaoprogresso

Website: fundicaoprogresso.com.br

Getting there: Metro to Cinelândia, then about 12 minutes on foot. The Arcos area stays busy on event nights and empties fast when there is nothing on.

Good to know: Buy online where possible. No strict dress code.

Neighbourhoods at a Glance

Lapa: Rio’s bohemian heart, loud and chaotic, with samba halls along Avenida Mem de Sá and Rua do Lavradio under the Arcos. Everyone from students to old-school malandros.

Saúde and Gamboa: The old port district, cobbled and half-restored, with Pedra do Sal at its centre. Grittier and more local than Lapa, and quiet the moment the music stops.

Copacabana: Beachfront classic with old botecos, the tiny Bip Bip jam room, and a steady tourist crowd. Safe and walkable if you stay on the main drags.

Centro and Cinelândia: Belle Époque facades and the Theatro Municipal, busy by day and quiet at night except around the cultural venues. Good for a dress-up evening.

Santa Teresa: Hillside arts enclave with bohemian restaurants and views over the bay. Perfect for a sunset drink before you drop down into Lapa.

LGBTQ+ Tonight

Rua Farme de Amoedo, Ipanema — The centre of gay Rio by day, and the bars around the street draw a mixed, friendly crowd on Friday nights. Nothing here needs booking; walk the block and pick a table.

Lapa — The samba houses are not gay venues but are entirely unbothered, and the street crowd on Mem de Sá is as mixed as Rio gets. One-off parties are announced on Instagram rather than in listings, so check on the day.

Money & How Paying Works

Dollar figures in this guide use the Banco Central PTAX close of 6 August 2026, R$5.1014 to US$1. Door charges quoted against a named venue come from that venue; drink prices are typical ranges for the neighbourhood, not quoted tariffs.

Comanda card system: the bigger venues give you a card on which drinks are tallied, and you settle at the cash desk on the way out. Do not lose it, as the penalty for a lost comanda is set high on purpose.

Couvert artístico: a per-head music charge, either added to your bill at the table or built into the door price. On a ticket it will say ‘couvert artístico incluso’.

Cash versus card: Pix is now the default across Rio and cards are widely taken, but the street vendors at Pedra do Sal and old-school botecos including Bip Bip are cash-only. Carry R$100–R$150 (US$19.60–US$29.40) in small notes.

Tipping: 10 per cent service is almost always printed on the bill as ‘serviço’. You can round up, but nothing further is expected.

Getting Home Safe

The metro runs late on Friday nights but not all night. If you are still in Lapa or Centro after midnight, plan on a rideshare or a taxi rather than the train.

99 and Uber are both reliable here. Pickup in Lapa is safest on the main avenues — Avenida Mem de Sá, Rua do Lavradio, Praça Floriano — where the lighting and foot traffic are good.

Late-night surge: between 1 am and 4 am, a ride from Lapa to Zona Sul typically runs R$25–R$45 (US$4.90–US$8.82). Prices spike when the big venues empty at once, so walk two blocks and order from a quieter corner.

Lapa is busy and generally fine on a Friday, but stick to the main streets and avoid the stairways up to Santa Teresa on foot after midnight. Pickpocketing in a crowd is the realistic risk; phone in a front pocket.

The port district around Trapiche Gamboa is industrial and empties out completely at night. Go straight from the venue to a pre-ordered car and do not go looking for an after-party on foot.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I wear to a samba club?

Smart-casual works almost everywhere: closed shoes rather than flip-flops, jeans or chinos, a shirt or a clean t-shirt. Skip high heels for Lapa’s cobblestones; wedges or flats are the sensible choice.

Is it OK to go out alone?

Yes, and Rio is easier than most big cities for it. At Pedra do Sal the crowd is communal and open, and at a table in Carioca da Gema you may well be adopted by the couple next to you.

Do I need to speak Portuguese?

Not much, but a little goes a long way: ‘uma cerveja, por favor’, ‘quanto custa?’ and ‘obrigado’ or ‘obrigada’ will carry you through the night. At Pedra do Sal and the smaller samba clubs very few people speak fluent English.
