03What to See & DoCULTURE
Hélio Oiticica permanent + Rubem Valentim — the strongest Sunday in town
After two weeks of No Martins at the MAR as the Today’s Pick, Sunday rotates the lead to the MAM Rio. Affonso Eduardo Reidy’s 1958 modernist building at the Aterro do Flamengo holds, year-in-year-out, the strongest single permanent gallery of twentieth-century Brazilian art on display anywhere: the Hélio Oiticica room, with the Parangolés, Bólides, and key Metaesquemas. Combine that with the Rubem Valentim retrospective currently on the upper floor and you have the canon-in-one-afternoon argument. Valentim was the Bahian who translated Candomblé iconography into geometric abstraction in the 1960s; the late paintings hold their own next to Tarsila and Volpi without straining.
What to look for: in the Oiticica room, the small Metaesquemas on paper from 1957–58 — the moment when the artist breaks free of the European geometric grid and starts building the Brazilian one. In Valentim, the late Emblemas series. Per Adriano Pedrosa in the show catalogue, Valentim “completed the project of Brazilian abstraction by giving it a religious grammar.”
Where to go after: walk south along the Aterro to Marina da Glória for Capital do Samba (15h onwards). Tue–Sun 10h–18h · R$14 / R$7 meia · Av. Infante Dom Henrique 85.
Instituto Moreira Salles — for the photographic counterweight
If MAM Rio is the painting canon, IMS Gávea is the photography canon, and they pair as an Aterro-to-Gávea Sunday afternoon. The IMS holds permanent and rotating exhibitions from one of the most important photography collections in South America, drawn from the Moreira Salles family’s six-decade-long acquisition project: Marc Ferrez’s 19th-century Rio panoramas, Pierre Verger’s Bahia of the 1940s, the Claudia Andujar Yanomami archive, and the contemporary rotation that currently includes a Letícia Parente video installation in the gardens. The Modernist house by Olavo Redig de Campos and Roberto Burle Marx alone is worth the visit. Free Sunday with the music programme starting 17h in the gardens.
Combine route: MAM Rio (11h–13h) → Aterro lunch → Uber/taxi to Gávea (20 min) → IMS (14h–18h, music in the gardens 17h). Tue–Sun 11h–20h · Free · Rua Marquês de São Vicente 476.

The dollar surged 1.59% to R$5.0664, back above R$5.00, with the week +3.48% (YTD -7.70%). Per Nomad’s Paula Zogbi, the session “consolidates a strongly risk-off scenario with aggressive global asset repricing.”
