Peruvian Prosecutor’s Office requests 36 months of preventive imprisonment against former president Castillo

The Peruvian Prosecutor’s Office requested this Tuesday 36 months of preventive imprisonment for alleged corruption against former president Pedro Castillo (2021-2022), who is already under preliminary detention in a Lima jail while he is being investigated for “rebellion”.

“The request for preventive detention for 36 months corresponds to the criminal proceedings for the crimes of criminal organization, collusion, and influence peddling,” the Public Prosecutor’s Office informed in a message published today on its Twitter social network account.

Likewise, the Supreme Transitory Prosecutor’s Office Specialized in Crimes Committed by Public Officials requested preventive imprisonment against the former ministers of Transport and Communications, Juan Silva, and Housing, Construction and Sanitation, Geiner Alvarado.

Silva is being investigated as the alleged perpetrator of the crime of criminal organization and simple collusion, while Alvarado is being investigated as alleged perpetrator of the crime of criminal organization.

The Peruvian Public Prosecutor’s Office formalized on February 21 an investigation against the aforementioned, shortly after Congress approved a report recommending to indict of Castillo and his former ministers for alleged acts of corruption during the previous government.

The report approved on Feb. 17 was based on the constitutional complaint filed in October 2022 by Attorney General Patricia Benavides, considering the alleged irregularities found in the works of the Tarata II Bridge in the region of San Martin (north), as well as other irregular facts.

It is important to mention that the constitutional complaint argues that the Prosecutor’s Office has “more than 190 evidentiary elements” that would support the thesis that the former president was the alleged leader of a criminal organization during his government.

Pedro Castillo is preliminarily detained for 18 months in the Barbadillo prison in the Peruvian capital.

The Prosecutor’s Office investigated him for “rebellion” after attempting to dissolve the Congress without a constitutional basis on December 7, 2022.
