The Peruvian city of Chiclayo expects about 1.5 million visitors around the Chiclayo papal visit of Pope Leo XIV in November. The regional tourism office of Lambayeque gave the figure on Saturday 10 October. For American Catholics, it is the clearest sign yet that the first US-born pope’s homecoming will strain a mid-sized city.

Félix Mio Sánchez is Lambayeque’s regional manager for foreign trade and tourism. He told the state news agency Andina that the estimate covers three periods. They are the week before the visit, the days the pope spends there, and the days after.

He put the expected economic impact at about US$200 million, spread across hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, transport and retail. He called the visit an investment in Lambayeque as a destination for religious tourism.

Why Chiclayo Matters to Leo XIV

Leo XIV was born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago. He worked in Peru as a missionary and led the Diocese of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023. He obtained Peruvian nationality in 2015.

The current bishop of Chiclayo, Monsignor Edinson Farfán, told the broadcaster RPP that the pope is “more Peruvian than the potato”. He said Leo XIV enjoys local dishes such as goat stew, duck with rice and ceviche.

Farfán said the priority for the pope is to be among his people again. He also said a Vatican commission will return in the last week of October to check the sites.

The Lima and Cusco stops are covered in Pope Leo XIV in Lima and Cusco, 11 to 16 November 2026. The new venue for the Lima youth event is in Pope Leo’s Lima Youth Rally Moves to Estadio Nacional.

Two Days in Chiclayo, Hour by Hour

The Holy See published the programme on Monday 21 September, and the official gazette El Peruano reproduced it. The pope is due to fly from Lima on Friday 13 November at 7:40 a.m.

He lands at the Teniente Coronel Pedro Ruiz Gallo air base in Chiclayo at 9:10 a.m. At 10:30 a.m. he celebrates Mass on the open ground of the Pampas de Pimentel, near the coast.

Lima runs on the same clock as New York in November, so the Mass starts at 10:30 a.m. Eastern time. Farfán said the Pimentel Mass could draw close to a million people.

That afternoon the pope visits the San Óscar A. Romero chapel privately. He then meets Church representatives at the Our Lady of Peace sanctuary and students at the Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo Catholic University.

On Saturday 14 November he crowns an image of the Virgin in Santa María Cathedral at 8 a.m. He then flies by helicopter to Santa Cruz de Succhabamba, in the Cajamarca region, for a Mass at 11 a.m.

Back in Chiclayo, he leads a prayer meeting at 5:30 p.m. that closes a jubilee year for Saint Toribio de Mogrovejo. He leaves for Cusco on Sunday 15 November at 7:50 a.m.

How the City Is Preparing

Mio said the regional government, the provincial council of Chiclayo and the Church have planned four days of cultural and religious events before the visit.

On 11 November, two local schools will hold a band contest, and singer Donny Yaipén is due on stage at 4 p.m. Organisers plan about 50 acts and ten large screens around the city.

About 15 religious images from Lambayeque and eight from other regions will take part. The Holy Cross of Motupe, a local devotion, is due to preside over the main altar at Pimentel.

The National Police will run the security barriers. The Foreign Ministry will install 2,000 portable toilets. A chapel dedicated to Saint Toribio is about 98% complete, and stage and sound suppliers start arriving on Monday 12 October.

At national level, Tourism Minister Rogers Valencia told RPP that about 854,000 people will travel for the whole visit. He expects slightly more than 50,000 of them to be international tourists.

Valencia said a temporary flight between Cuenca, in Ecuador, and Chiclayo has been authorised. Lodging is the main bottleneck in Chiclayo and Pucallpa, so the ministry is arranging private homes as extra rooms.

What It Means for You

For US pilgrims, the Chiclayo papal visit will be the hardest stop to reach and to sleep in. Most visitors will connect through Lima, and rooms in the city are already the stated pinch point.

The stabiliser is planning. Police, the Foreign Ministry and the regional government each have assigned tasks. A Vatican team inspects the sites again in late October.

For investors in Peru’s hotel, airline and retail sectors, the visit is a short demand boost. The risk is that crowd estimates prove optimistic and that El Niño weather or road problems disrupt travel in the north.

What Is Not Known

The regional estimate of 1.5 million is far above the national figure of about 854,000. Neither office has explained its method. The regional number may include local residents and a longer period.

The cabinet was due to discuss non-working days for the visit on Friday 9 October. Valencia said they could apply by macro-region, but the dates and regions have not been announced.

It is not yet known how many foreign pilgrims will reach Chiclayo itself. Nor is it clear how organisers will move up to a million people to and from Pimentel.
