RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The confirmed Covid-19 cases have reached 1.5 million worldwide, according to the pandemic monitoring service conducted by Johns Hopkins University in the United States.

Over 430,000 cases have been reported in the United States, which has the highest number of infections. Spain (152,000), Italy (139,000), Germany (113,000) and France (83,000) are also among the countries with the highest number of confirmed cases.

In Italy, at least 17,000 people have died from the disease. In Spain, the country with the second highest number of deaths, there were over 15,000 deaths caused by Covid-19. The number of deaths exceeds 4,500 in the American state of New York alone.

However, the number of diagnosed cases reflects only a part of the total number of infections, due to the different policies adopted by each country to record cases – some do so only with people in a severe condition, as is the case in Brazil.

The detection of a novel virus in China was reported to the WHO (World Health Organization) in late December 2019. Since then, 89,000 have died as a result of Covid-19.
