Northern Peru airport resumes operations after maintenance work

After nearly six months of being non-operational due to maintenance works, the Fernando Belaunde Terry Jaen airport, located in the Cajamarca region of northern Peru, will reopen.

The Peru Ministry of Transport and Communications confirmed that operations would recommence the following day.

The Peruvian Corporation of Airports and Commercial Aviation, part of the same ministry, spent approximately 4.5 million soles (around US$1.2 million) on refurbishing the runway and passenger terminal of the facility, also known as Shumba, beginning in February.

Initially, the project faced a slight delay, but the Jaen airport was ultimately authorized to restart operations by late May.

The reopening was estimated to take place either in the first week of July or by June end.

The airport, a 25-minute drive from Jaen city, provides easier access to notable tourist sites, including the Amazon region’s Kuelap Fortress and Gocta waterfalls.

The fortress, an archeological remnant of the pre-Inca Chachapoyas culture, served as a defense mechanism for the northern Andes.

Gocta waterfall, standing over 700 meters tall, is one of the world’s largest.
