Mozambique wants to be full member of Gas Producing Countries Forum

Mozambique’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Carlos Zacarias, has expressed the country’s interest in becoming a full member of the Gas Producing Countries Forum (GECF), according to a statement from the Mozambican government agency.

Zacarias made the intention known during a meeting with the secretary-general of the GECF, Mohamed Hamel, as part of the ministerial meeting of this entity, taking place today in Cairo, the capital of Egypt, the statement quoted by daily newspaper Notícias said.

At the meeting, Hamel said that Mozambique would become the world’s fifth largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) when the country starts producing this resource in the Rovuma basin, northern region.

The official called on the country to continue to produce an adequate legal and regulatory framework for the oil industry.

Today’s (October 25) meeting in Cairo has as agenda items the discussion on the global vision of the gas market in the world, the management report of the GECF executive committee, and the review of the long-term strategy.

The GECF is an intergovernmental organization established to exchange experiences among member countries, producers, and consumers to improve the stability and security of supply and demand in the world’s gas market.

The organization’s members hold 72% of the world’s gas reserves and 43% of the world’s commercialized production.
