  • Record haul: Mexico earned about US$18.78 billion (US$18,780 million) from international tourism in the first half of 2026 — a historic high, per Sectur and Banxico data.
  • But barely up: That forex figure rose just 0.5% from the same period in 2025.
  • More people: 51.1 million international visitors arrived from January to June, up 7.7% year on year — also a record.
  • Overnight guests: 24.5 million stayed at least one night, up 4.6% — another record.
  • The Cup: The 2026 FIFA World Cup (11 June–19 July) brought roughly 3 million foreign visitors to Mexico, but about 60% were day-trippers who never booked a hotel.
  • Host-city cash: Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey logged 7.8 million visitors and more than MX$42 billion (~US$2.46 billion) in tourism revenue.

Mexico banked its biggest-ever first-half tourism windfall in 2026, and the World Cup helped — but the numbers tell a more interesting story than the headline.

The Mexico World Cup tourism record is now official: the country pulled in about US$18.78 billion in foreign tourism earnings during the first half of 2026, the highest six-month total it has ever posted. Sectur, the federal tourism ministry, says five separate tourism records fell in that window, and the FIFA World Cup Mexico co-hosted with the United States and Canada gets a chunk of the credit.

The Mexico World Cup tourism record, by the numbers

Start with the big figure. Foreign visitors spent roughly US$18,780 million in Mexico between January and June 2026, according to figures the tourism ministry draws from Inegi’s international traveler survey and the Bank of Mexico. That beats every previous first half on record.

Here is the catch. The number is up only 0.5% from a year earlier. So the record is real, but the growth behind it is thin. What moved more was the crowd: 51.1 million international visitors came through, up 7.7%, and 24.5 million of them stayed overnight, up 4.6%. Both are all-time highs for a first half.

What the World Cup actually delivered

The tournament ran from 11 June to 19 July, with matches in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey. Sectur says those three host cities together drew 7.8 million domestic and international visitors and generated more than MX$42 billion (~US$2.46 billion) in tourism revenue over the period.

That sounds huge, and it is money the cities would not otherwise have seen. But the shape of the crowd matters. Of the roughly 3 million foreign visitors tied to the Cup, about 60% were day-trippers — fans who bought a match ticket and a jersey, then left without booking a room. Day visitors spend far less than someone who books five nights, eats out and takes taxis. So the Cup filled stadiums more than it filled hotel ledgers.

Fewer flights, but bigger wallets

June’s data shows the trade-off clearly. Air arrivals actually fell 5.3% year on year, to about 1.75 million — a warning sign, since air travelers are usually the highest spenders. Some of that reflects US border friction and pricier flights, not a lack of interest in Mexico.

Yet spending per head went the other way. The average air-arriving tourist spent US$1,283.80 in June, up 9.6%, and the average non-border tourist spent US$1,096, up 8.6%. Total traveler spending for the month reached US$2,912.5 million, up 5.9%. In plain terms: fewer flights landed, but the people on them opened their wallets wider. That is what kept the record alive.

Records built on more than one tournament

It would be easy to read this as a pure World Cup windfall. The fuller picture is that Mexico’s tourism machine was already running hot before the first whistle. The first quarter set records with no Cup in sight, and domestic travel — Mexican families taking summer trips — has been a bigger engine than international fans all year.

So think of the Cup as an accelerant on an economy that was already climbing, not the fire itself. It nudged spending per visitor up, put Mexico on millions of TV screens worldwide, and gave three big cities a strong quarter. What it did not do was single-handedly create the record. The volume of ordinary tourists did most of the work.

Why this matters if you live in or invest in Latin America

If your money or your daily life is tied to Mexico, this is a healthy signal with an asterisk. Tourism is one of Mexico’s top foreign-currency earners, and a record first half means dollars flowing into hotels, restaurants, airports and the peso. That supports jobs in coastal states and host cities, and it steadies the currency you may be paid in or spending. But the flat 0.5% growth and the drop in air arrivals say the sector is broadening, not booming — so if you are eyeing hospitality property or a tourism-linked business, watch spend-per-visitor and flight capacity, not just the record headline.

51.1 million international visitors arrived from January to June, up 7.7% year on year. Of those, 24.5 million stayed at least one night, up 4.6%. Both figures are records.

How much did the World Cup host cities make?

Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey together drew 7.8 million visitors and generated more than MX$42 billion (~US$2.46 billion) in tourism revenue during the tournament, according to Sectur.
