Marine Le Pen, leader of France’s far-right National Rally party, is more popular than President Emmanuel Macron, according to an Ifop poll for Paris Match published Wednesday.

Specifically, 47% of those consulted said they preferred Le Pen, while 42% chose the current president.

Le Pen was more popular among women, with 52% preference against 41% for Macron.

Within the left-wing Nupes group, most of those supporting the Communist Party and France Insoumise chose the opposition leader, twice runner-up in national elections.

At the same time, supporters of the Greens and Socialists went for Macron.

Le Pen has twice lost presidential runoffs to Macron, in 2017 and last year.

The next presidential election will be held in 2027 when Macron cannot run due to term limits.

Ifop surveyed 1,000 adults for Paris Match on April 18 and 19, following Macron’s televised speech on Monday night.

Another Ifop poll of 1,000 adults on April 18 and 19 for Le Journal du Dimanche showed that 76% do not trust the president to improve the country’s situation, including healthcare and education.

The margin of error was around 2.5-2.8 percentage points.
