Manaus will host the first Indigenous Fashion Showcase of Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – From April 2nd to 23rd, Manaus will host the first edition of the “Intercultural Indigenous Fashion Show”. The unprecedented event will occur at the Parque das Tribos, Salão Rio Solimões, and Sumaúma Park Shopping.

The first edition’s theme is the indigenous graphics configured in the costumes and traces of the costumes, paintings, and handicrafts that represent the particularities of each ethnic group.

The event counts with the participation of 29 stylists, being two collectives, and 37 indigenous models, from the Munduruku, Baré, Sateré-Mawé, Tikuna, Witoto, Mura, Tariano, Kambeba, Carapanã, and Kokama ethnic groups, among others. In all, 70 professionals are involved in the event.

Seanny Artes Produções’ show happens in partnership with the Extension Project “Contadores de História” from the Superior School of Arts and Tourism (Esat) and the Amazonas State University (UEA). The event’s executive producer, actress Reby Oliveira, explains the importance of this event, unprecedented in Brazil for its 100% indigenous character.

“It is the first indigenous fashion event in Brazil, and this took us by surprise because there is only one recognized indigenous fashion designer in Brazil, We’e’ena Tikuna. We have huge ethnic populations, seen as minorities, but they are the majority, with many languages, but unknown to the context in which we live. For example, in Parque das Tribos there are 36 ethnic groups, and the models in the show are all from there,” she comments.

PROGRAM

Professor Vanessa Bordin, also the show’s creator, who participates as a presenter of the event alongside Carlos Kokama, reveals how the parades will take place during the three days of presentation.

“Cultural, performative, musical attractions and parades will bring visibility and ancestry. Indigenous artists and their creations will appear on the catwalk, telling stories of their people through clothing, garments, ornaments, and compositions. It will be tradition dialoguing with modernity,” said Bordin.

The first “Intercultural Indigenous Fashion Show” involves 70 professionals from different areas, including the production team, support, sponsors, stylists, models, workshop students, and the parade public.
