Lava Jato Recovers More than R$4 Billion; Petrobras Gets Largest Share

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – According to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, this amount was reached in October, with the beginning of the investment of R$220 million (US$55 million) by Ecorodovias to subsidize the 30 percent reduction in the company’s toll posts tariff.

The more than R$4 billion returned are divided into R$570 million to subsidize the reduction of tolls in Paraná managed by two concessionaires, of which R$220 million by Ecorodovias and R$350 million by Rodonorte.

There are also R$3,023,990,764.92 related to amounts already allocated to Petrobras due to the criminal scheme uncovered in the operation; R$416,523,412.77 allocated to the federal coffers, and R$59 million transferred to the 11th Court of the Judiciary Section of Goiás.

The data show that, in 2019 alone, almost R$1.7 billion were returned.

Recovery and numbers

So far, the total amounts provided for in leniency agreements, collaboration, TAC and voluntary waivers reach R$14.3 billion – of which R$4 billion have already been returned.

Leniency with companies accounts for most of this amount – R$12.4 billion expected. Another R$2.1 billion are expected in fines resulting from collaboration; R$111.5 million in voluntary guilty pleas; and R$4 million in a TAC.

In more than five years of operation, 68 stages were triggered by the task force in Paraná alone, with the compliance of 1,302 search and seizure warrants, 227 forceful warrants, 327 warrants of arrest issued by the federal courts (temporary and preventive) against 280 people (some involved are still fugitives).

Throughout the period, 112 criminal charges were also brought against 484 people. Sentences have been handed down in 50 cases, totaling 244 convictions against 159 people, reported the Federal Prosecutor’s office.

To date, the sum of sentences imposed has reached 2,249 years, four months and 24 days. Within the operation, ten administrative misconduct actions were brought against 63 individuals, 18 companies and three political parties (PP, MDB, and PSB), demanding the payment of R$18.3 billion.
