Haiti: More than 2.2 million children in need

The international non-governmental organization “Save the Children” is very concerned about the welfare of children and their families in Haiti in the face of escalating violence and worsening political and economic crisis.

“Save the Children” urgently appeals to the international community to increase its support to the Caribbean nation to meet the growing needs of vulnerable children and families.

More than 4.9 million people – including 2.2 million children – need aid, with many suffering from hunger and malnutrition.

Widespread poverty, the rising cost of living, extreme violence, low agricultural production, expensive food imports, and increasing political instability have exacerbated food insecurity in Haiti.

The situation in the country is becoming increasingly precarious, and violence has reached extreme levels. Access to water and food is very difficult, with children being the most affected, suffering from hunger and at risk of death.

There is no medical care for mothers trapped behind barricades. “We appeal to the international community to continue efforts to support children and families in Haiti,” said Chantal Imbeault, Save the Children’s country director in Haiti.

The organization has been working in Haiti since 1978.

“Save the Children” responded to the deadly earthquake of 2010 and today addresses the basic needs of children and families, especially in the areas most affected by the earthquake in August 2021.

This humanitarian response includes sheltering in child-friendly spaces, ensuring access to health and education services, and providing cash transfers to the most vulnerable.
