Google reaffirms commitment with Brazil, foreseeing US$1.2 billion in investments

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On Tuesday, June 14, Google held, in São Paulo, its main annual event in the country, Google for Brazil.

Fábio Coelho, president of the company in the country, opened the event by reinforcing the commitment to the local market and announcing a series of long-term initiatives to contribute to the Brazilian economic recovery.

Before Google for Brazil, Sundar Pichai, Google’s global CEO, had already announced investments of R$6 billion (US$1.2 billion) for Latin America in the next five years. Coelho pointed out that the goal is to strengthen Brazil’s role as an innovation hub.

“In January, we announced our goal to expand our Engineering force in the country. We shared our plan to open a new multidisciplinary Engineering Center in São Paulo at today’s event. Located on the University of São Paulo Campus, the new building will be part of IPT Open Experience, a program of the São Paulo Institute for Technological Research to promote innovation,” he said.

According to Coelho, Google’s new Engineering Center in São Paulo should be inaugurated by the end of 2024 and will be able to accommodate up to 400 professionals from several technical specialties.

“We are also announcing, in partnership with the Google Safety Engineering Center (GSEC), an awareness program to promote content responsibility in Brazil. Through engagement with technology experts, educators, regulators, and opinion leaders, we will discuss our approach to responsible content and internet safety and seek to bring even more transparency to our work,” he said.

ECONOMY

Coelho emphasized that Google and its divisions will cause an impact of R$104.5 billion on the Brazilian economy by 2021, highlighting the company’s commitment to economic recovery.

“To offer products and services in physical stores, it is important that companies keep their information on the Internet up to date. Aiming to help companies in this task, we started to conduct tests with Duplex, our artificial intelligence technology for natural conversation.

“In the last few months, we’ve made calls to commercial establishments all over Brazil to update their opening hours in the Company Profile in Search and Google Maps.”

INCLUSION

Finally, Coelho mentioned that since 2017, the company had invested more than R$1.6 billion to strengthen its infrastructure in Brazil, including submarine cables and a Cloud region in São Paulo.

“All these projects aim to improve the quality of digital services offered to Brazilians and pave the growth of our cloud computing business. As our employee base continues to grow, our Cloud team in Brazil will gain a new office in São Paulo in 2023,” he highlighted.

The company also announced a commitment to offering 500,000 scholarships for Google Career Certificates over the next four years.

“This year, we will make 30,000 of these places available in partnership with the Centro de Integração Empresa-Escola (CIEE), helping Brazilians find professional relocation in fast-growing areas such as data analytics and UX Design. We also expanded Capacita+, our cloud computing content hub.”
