Faith Factor: Religious Practice Drives Global Wellbeing, Harvard Study Finds

Harvard University researchers have discovered a strong link between religious participation and human flourishing in their landmark Global Flourishing Study.

The $43.4 million research project surveyed over 200,000 people across 22 countries, representing 64% of the world’s population. The study measures six domains of human flourishing: happiness, health, meaning, character, relationships, and financial stability.

People who attend religious services more than once weekly scored an average of 7.67 on the global flourishing index. This score decreases to 7.08 for those attending a few times yearly and drops further to 6.86 for non-attendees.

Professor Tyler VanderWeele, who leads Harvard‘s Human Flourishing Program, emphasized that religious service attendance consistently associates with wellbeing across countries and outcomes.

The research shows individuals considering religion important in daily life scored 0.23 points higher on the flourishing index than those who don’t. Global rankings revealed surprising patterns.

Indonesia topped the flourishing list despite having lower GDP per capita than many wealthy nations. Israel ranked second, followed by the Philippines, Mexico, and Poland.

The United Kingdom performed poorly, ranking 20th out of 22 countries, beating only Turkey and Japan. The study challenges assumptions about wealth and happiness.

Many middle-income developing countries demonstrated better outcomes for meaning, purpose, and relationships than richer developed nations. This suggests material prosperity alone cannot guarantee human flourishing.

Age patterns also emerged from the data. Younger people (18-49 years) scored lower (7.03) on flourishing measures than older adults. Flourishing increases with age, reaching 7.36 for those 80 years or older.

This trend raises concerns about youth wellbeing in developed nations like the UK, US, and Australia. Reverend Joshua Rey of Holy Trinity Roehampton commented on Britain‘s poor showing: “The explanation of our anxiety and hopelessness despite prosperity is junk food, smartphones and the decline of organised religion.”

The research indicates religious participation offers benefits beyond spiritual fulfillment. It contributes to overall wellbeing through community connection, sense of purpose, and service to others.

These findings prompt important questions about societal priorities and development paths that balance economic growth with spiritual wellbeing.
