Fabric Capable of Neutralizing Coronavirus Developed in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A partnership between the National Industrial Learning Service (SENAI), Bio-Manguinhos (Fiocruz unit), and Diklatex has enabled the development of a fabric capable of neutralizing the novel coronavirus.

Preliminary tests were conducted in early June and showed that the fabric samples were capable of inactivating over 99.9 percent of the respiratory viral particles of measles and mumps. Subsequently, after successfully testing for both viruses, the researchers confirmed the same effectiveness for Covid-19.

According to information from the National Confederation of Industry (CNI), the Bio-Manguinhos, in partnership with the Center for Chemical and Textile Industry Technology (Senai CETIQT) and Diklatex, is experimentally assessing the action of these antiviral fabrics for the production of masks and gowns.

According to the head of the Laboratory of Virological Technology (LATEV), Sheila Maria Barbosa de Lima, one of the fabrics tested was capable of deactivating 99.9 percent of the viral particles of the novel coronavirus after one minute of contact with the material.

“The confirmation of the fabric’s anti-SARS-CoV-2 action produced by SENAI CETIQT/Diklatex stands out in the current scenario in Brazil amid the pandemic as a significant protective equipment in the fight against the spread of the virus,” says the head of Latev.
