Dollar falls against the Brazilian real by 2.14% and closes below R$5 before interest rate turnaround
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The dollar closed the day with a sharp decline of 2.14% – the highest level since December 2021 – to close at R$4.9625. The deviation was mainly due to an international movement of the dollar depreciation.
According to market participants, a new injection of liquidity by the local monetary authority in the foreign exchange market also contributed to the dollar losses.
The dollar also moved lower against most emerging market currencies, particularly the South African rand and the Mexican and Chilean pesos, which suffered yesterday (2) as the U.S. currency rose to near its highest level in 20 years.

The dollar depreciation is also influenced by the Federal Reserve (Fed) meeting, which is expected to announce another interest rate hike in the United States.
According to the international news agency Reuters, another increase of 0.5% is expected. The cumulative U.S. interest rate is expected to end the year between 3% and 4% – the highest level since 2000.
Brazil is also scheduled to make announcements relevant to the economy on Wednesday. The Central Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (Copom) will announce a revision of the key interest rate (Selic), currently at 11.75%. An increase of one percentage point is expected.
In the stock market, the main Brazilian index, the Ibovespa, closed at a slight low after fluctuations, as investors were cautious ahead of economic decisions in Brazil and the United States.
The Ibovespa fell 0.1% to 106,528.09 points – its third consecutive low. The volume of the session was R$23.3 billion.
