Deaths in Brazil increased by 18%, and births fell in 2021, says IBGE 

The number of deaths in Brazil increased by 18% in 2021 compared to death records in 2020.

Two years ago, about 1.8 million deaths were recorded in the country, which is 273,000 more deaths than in the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic, which recorded 1.5 million.

This is the new record in the historical series that began in 1974.

The data were released on Thursday, 16, by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

The number of deaths in 2021 exceeded (35.9%) that of 2020 among adults aged 40 to 49 years and 50 to 59 years (31.3%).

Concerning the group from 70 to 79 years and 80 years or more, the number of deaths grew less.

The research indicates that the advance occurred especially in the first half of 2021.

The month of March registered the highest number of deaths: 202,500.

The figure is 77.8% higher compared to the same period in 2020.

Already in the second half of 2021, the number of deaths fell.

“The implementation of sanitary measures and, subsequently, the campaigns to encourage vaccination seem to have contributed to the retreat of the pandemic and its consequences. There is a clear adherence between the decrease in the number of deaths and the advance of vaccination in the country,” explained the research manager, Klívia Brayner.

The IBGE report also showed that there was a 1.6% drop in the number of births in 2021.

Compared to 2020, there were 43,000 fewer births two years ago, totaling about 2.6 million.

IBGE reported that it was the third consecutive year of decline. In 2019, it was 3%, and in 2020, 4.7%.
