Considerable Challenges in Brazil’s Vehicle Manufacturing
In May 2024, environmental challenges and strict regulations caused Brazil’s auto production to fall 25% from April, to 166,700 units.
This sharp decline stemmed from Ibama’s slowdowns and severe floods in Rio Grande do Sul, according to Anfavea.
These floods wreaked havoc on the supply chains and local component manufacturing.
Despite these hurdles, the story wasn’t all gloom. Vehicle sales painted a brighter picture, showing resilience amid adversity.
While licensing of vehicles dipped 12% from April, it actually rose by 10% compared to May last year, totaling around 194,000 vehicles.
Over the course of 2024, the industry saw a modest production decline of 1.7%, totaling 926,800 vehicles.
On the flip side, new vehicle sales surged by 15%, reaching 929,700 units.
Considerable Challenges in Brazil’s Vehicle Manufacturing
Leading automakers like General Motors, Volkswagen, and Mercedes-Benz bore the brunt of these disruptions.
They adjusted operations, introducing breaks and shutdowns to mitigate the floods’ and regulations’ impacts.
Anfavea’s president noted the sector lost 12,000 units in Rio Grande do Sul due to flooding.
